His musical career combines powerful rock vocals, authentic live performance, and a deep commitment to meaningful messages. Beyond music, Thorsten is dedicated to animal welfare, vegan living, environmental protection, and human rights, using his artistic platform to promote compassion, awareness, and positive change. From his early years as a young songwriter and rock vocalist through countless live performances, tribute projects, and original releases, Thorsten has developed a unique identity as an artist who combines musical passion with a strong humanitarian vision.
Musical Career Timeline
Age 14 – First musical beginnings
Thorsten began his musical journey by learning keyboard, laying the foundation for his later development as a songwriter and performer.
Age 16 – Founding of his first band “Härtegrad”
Thorsten founded his first band, “Härtegrad,” performing exclusively his own original compositions. This early project established his passion for writing and performing original music.
1988–1990 – Vocalist of “Griffin Joke”
Thorsten achieved his first major successes as lead vocalist of the Wächtersbach rock band “Griffin Joke.” The band stood out through an ambitious combination of original songs and unconventional cover material, including David Bowie’s Station to Station, demonstrating an early willingness to move beyond typical cover-band formats.
1991 – Vocalist of “Earl Grey”
Thorsten joined the Butzbach-based rock band “Earl Grey,” performing a mixture of original material and carefully selected rock classics. During this period, the band:
- performed as support act for the Rodgau Monotones
- played the Ferschweiler Plateau Open Air before approximately 7,000 attendees
- reached the finals of the prestigious 1822 Rock Competition
1996–1999 – Frontman of “Cheap Turtle”
Thorsten became the lead singer of the Frankfurt-based Deep Purple tribute band “Cheap Turtle.” The group became one of the better-known tribute acts in the Rhine-Main region and beyond, with Thorsten serving as frontman for three years.
1997–2006 – Vocalist of “Band In Trouble (B.I.T.)”
In parallel, Thorsten joined the Wehrheim rock formation “Band In Trouble” (B.I.T.), performing with the band—with a two-year interruption—until 2006.
2011–2014 – Continued musical development as TARUN
Performing under the stage name TARUN, Thorsten continued singing with several rock projects in the Lahn-Dill region, further expanding his live experience and artistic versatility.
2014 – Formation of new tribute and acoustic projects with Bert Gocke
In late 2014, Thorsten founded the David Bowie tribute band “SERIOUS MOONLIGHT” together with renowned jazz guitarist Bert Gocke. Since June 2014, the two have also collaborated in the acoustic rock project “TAB – Acoustic Rock,” performing together regularly on stage.
Ongoing – Original music and humanitarian messages
Alongside his extensive live career, Thorsten has continued writing, recording, and releasing original songs and music videos through YouTube and digital platforms. His releases combine authentic rock expression with messages of hope, unity, compassion, and social awareness. Songs such as “All The Best” and “A Common Dream” reflect his commitment to inspiring positive change and a better future.
2025–2026 – New chapter with MotionWind Media
A significant new phase in Thorsten’s artistic journey began through his collaboration with MotionWind Media, recording new songs written and produced by Jayce Kingstone. Together, these recordings continue Thorsten Funk’s mission to unite powerful rock music with a message of compassion, hope, and positive change.
The first release from this collaboration, “Kilimanjaro,” is a powerful rock song celebrating the beauty of Africa’s wildlife and natural environment while emphasizing the importance of protecting animals and preserving nature.
The second release, “It’s Not Impossible,” delivers an inspiring message of determination and self-belief, encouraging people to pursue their dreams and recognise that goals once considered impossible can become reality through courage and perseverance.
Through his music, performances, and activism, Thorsten Funk continues to unite powerful rock energy with a message of compassion, hope, and positive transformation.
